A letter from the President of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU):

Dear Rector/President/Vice-Chancellor,

In the spirit of a universal aspiration to fraternity, involving the same dignity and rights to progress for men and women alike, the International Federation of Catholic Universities is launching a survey to map and analyze the situation of women academics and staff amongst our member institutions. This study will be the first comprehensive study addressing this matter. We hope to be able to understand the condition around the globe, so as to be able to advance measures and policies that may contribute to advance Pope Francis’ call for the same dignity and equal rights for men and women at Catholic universities and colleges.

The results of the survey shall be made available to all IFCU members and shall be offered to Pope Francis and the Congregation for Catholic Education.

I kindly ask you to respond to the survey in the link below by April 15th 2021.

Politics in North and South Korea, the first topic, provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the political dynamics of North and South Korea which traced the history of political and economic development and international relations of the Korean peninsula, showing how South Korea became democratized and how Juche ideology has affected the establishment and operation of a totalitarian system in North Korea. The issue of having different political ideologies existing within North and South Korea posed a very relevant question – With the existence of several ideologies within a country and inter-countries, how do we reach reconciliation?

The discussion on Gender Equality and Social Institution centered on gender equality being equated to the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men. It emphasized uplifting human security where there is freedom from fear and freedom from want and that in order to achieve equality in contemporary society, there is a great need to break discriminative gender dimensions or stereotypes created by the society.

The last topic Reconciliation, Human Rights, and Democracy: Challenges for the People of East Asia focused on enormous human rights violations that happened during the two world wars in the 20th century in which states, along with emerging international organizations and supported by the non-governmental sector, adopted liberal moral and normative standards as universal standards, bringing attention to individual rights and protection by international legal regimes. The human security paradigm challenges the traditional notion of national security. Its main assumption is that the people-centered view of security is necessary for national, regional and global stability and the proper referent for security should be the individuals and groups of people rather than the state.

September 24, 2019

During the opening ceremony of the 27th ASEACCU Annual Conference
@ Sogang University, Seoul, Korea, Prof. Gil delivered the following message:

Isabel Capeloa Gil (IFCU President)
Address to ASEACCU Conference (August 21, 2019)

Executive Secretary, Fr. Dagohoy.
Distinguished Board members of Aseaccu,
members of ASEACCU, faculty and students

I am truly delighted to be here, in Seoul, at the annual conference of the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities, and to have the opportunity to address the distinguished members of this association on behalf of IFCU (International Federation of Catholic Universities). We live interesting and challenging times, full of potential, on the one side, and prone to destruction, on the other. In this environment the role of Catholic universities is more relevant than ever to secure a more humane future for mankind.

And there are three main reasons why this moment is particularly relevant. Firstly, because we are aware that in the spirit of engagement that His Holiness Pope Francis inspires us to pursue, institutions at the service of the universal Church, must be institutions that go forth, that dare to take concrete action in the wide world we are privileged to inhabit. A global federation, such as IFCU, honors the true sense of its globality, and that means working together with member universities and Associations worldwide to advance our great common mission of empowering Catholic higher education.

https://aseaccu.asia/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Prof-Gil-bc.jpg

Allow me, nonetheless, to venture a more in-depth look at what this ‘global’ actually means. Other than culture and nature, global is arguably one of the most loaded words in academic vocabulary. The global is both a condition and a strategy, it is a source of anxiety and a project of expansion, it speaks of a desire for recognition and of exclusion. From a philosophical point of view, the global recalls that which Heidegger called ‘the gigantic’ (Das Riesige), defined by the abolition of distances and the representation of daily life in unfamiliar and distant worlds. It speaks of the conquest of both time and space.

We convene here today as global subjects in one of the fastest growing areas for Catholicism. University leaders, faculty, staff and students, we are true representatives of the global diaspora of hope universities embody. For truly, universities have been since their inception drivers of advancement beyond borders. We are heirs to the early scholasticus vagans (wandering scholar), of the medieval university, who could today be very well represented both by the exchange students and the visiting scholars. Clearly, for universities internationalization is not a simple strategy, it is part of their mission. But at the same time, as part of our concrete horizon of action, we must be aware that the cosmopolitan condition cannot or should not obscure that other effect of the global ‘gigantic’, the one Arjun Appadurai names the diaspora of fear, beset with the despair of refugees and migrants. It is also the task of universities, most specifically of Catholic universities, to educate the youth in the spirit of a global caring and mutually responsible humanity, conscious of our situation as what Homi Bhabha calls ‘Translated beings’, always on the move, engaging with difference and transformed by every new dialogue.

In sum, a global federation such as IFCU is a translatable organization, working in collaboration with partners worldwide, serving their needs and articulating their concerns. It is an organization that goes forth and I am particularly enthused by the meeting yesterday with the Board of ASEACCU and the possibilities of renewed cooperation to create new spaces and platforms for research and development dialogue. I wish to acknowledge, and thank, at this stage the tremendous work that has been done by the representative of ASEACCU, Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, as IFCU Board member.

A few words about the history of IFCU. Over the past 95 years, the International Federation of Catholic Universities has been steadily working to advance the cause of Catholic higher education. Founded in 1924 through the engaged work of leading European universities (KU Leuven, Univ. Sacro Cuore, Milan, and Univ. Nijmegen) IFCU has consistently worked to support the quality, autonomy and relevance of Catholic universities in light of the Gospel’s revelation with true autonomy and academic freedom.

The Federation was also born at a time that speaks to the second reason of relevance I wish to single out and pivots to the importance of the topic under which ASEACCU’s conference is convening “Reconciliation and the Situation in the East Asian Region”. IFCU was born in the aftermath of the I World War, at a moment when internationalism was promoted as a strategy to fight the defeated, but nonetheless terribly latent hyper-nationalism amongst European nations. Not only was internationalization a hallmark of the universal work of the Church, but universities as well were understood as the peace builders for the future of our common humanity. As we convene in South Korea today, in the frontline of the longest lasting global point of tension, it is important to consider how our work as academics may lead towards effective reconciliation. As Catholics, we understand there is no other way, no matter how hard.

This does not mean, doing away with the terrible memories of past violence. Nations are marked with the scars of war. They may be older or quite recent, but national memories are more often than not packed with suffering and resentment, pain and an even if repressed desire for retribution. An insightful inspiration comes from the address given by Pope John Paul II in his visit to the Yad Vashem, in Israel. Remembering the Holocaust, he said “We remember, but not with any desire for vengeance or as an incentive to hatred. For us, to remember is to pray for peace and justice, and to commit ourselves to their cause. Only a world at peace, with justice for all, can avoid repeating the mistakes and terrible crimes of the past.” Catholic Universities have a mission of global dialogue, that positions them as primordial peacebuilders. From study to action, we must commit to a future of reconciliation and both IFCU and ASEACCU are instrumental in supporting this work. In this vent, IFCU launched in 2018 the Peace Studies Network, an international group of multidisciplinary research with the aim of studying international relations, conflicts, and strategies for conflict prevention and the construction of sustainable peace.

Thirdly, let me single out the common challenges that universities and Catholic universities more deeply are facing today. In 2019, the landscape of higher education is changing fast and irrevocably. Pope Francis’ address to the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador sums up our challenge in two key questions. He says, “As a university, as educational institutions, as teachers and students, life itself challenges us to answer these two questions: What does this world need us for? Where is your brother?”

Our task is challenging but not daunting. If we are to prepare for a future where the jobs to come have not yet been invented, – and has it ever been different ? – working across boundaries is a necessary condition. These boundaries are not simply instrumental, they are also axiological, epistemological and cultural. It means unpacking complexity from a problem-based perspective with an ethical horizon and respectful of cultural diversity.

Science at the service of the common good means taking up the challenge of improving the human condition while respecting the whole life of the planet, it requires taking up the challenges, the threats and the opportunities where they are placed. And it involves working across disciplines, across nations. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe argued, “there is no such thing as patriotic science”. In its work for the institutional advancement of Catholic universities, IFCU supports the development of transnational research, promotes international quality assessment, fosters global networking through its global training programs and is about to launch a global student exchange program amongst member institutions worldwide. We work to build bridges and together we can transform individual strengths into global power. Let me end by thanking the invitation to be here today, wish all of you a productive work and invite all those gathered here today, to build coalitions, so that armed with a culture of dialogue and encounter between our universities, the Church, and the communities in which we operate, we may truly embrace the splendor of our present.

The challenge for educators to innovate and design school curriculum to equip a new generation of students for the significantly changing world has reached greater heights. The contemporary academic milieu requires higher learning institutions to design holistic learning experience, develop interrelated competencies, and provide a learning environment that is operated by technology to support the lived experience of the students in the digital era, with schools promoting authentic learning to connect what students gain to address real-world issues and problems, and the development of 21st-century skills among learners of today.

The De La Salle Lipa, Philippines invites participants from the member schools of The Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU) to take part in the conference entitled “Co-Creating and Co-Designing the Future of Education Conferences: Getting Ready for the Future of Learning” which will be held at the SMX Convention Center, Seashell Lane, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City 1300, Philippines, on January 21 – 22, 2019.

For more details about the conference and our speakers, please visit the official conference website www.futureofedcon.org or you may get in touch with Ms. Beverly Luna at secretariat@futureofedcon.org

Elisabeth University of Music in Hiroshima, Japan hosted the 2018 ASEACCU Conference on August 21-26, 2018. The theme for this year’s conference is Catholic Education and Peace Initiatives. Kazumi Matsui, Mayor of the City of Hiroshima, Dr. Seung Chul Kim, Nanzan Institute Professor, and Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, S.J., President of Ateneo de Manila University of the Philippines delivered keynote lecture.

https://aseaccu.asia/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Mayor_Matzui-225x300-1.jpg

Mr. Matzui’s lecture titled From Hiroshima to Our World Free from Nuclear Weapons – Beyond Human Atrocities provided a glimpse of the harrowing and devastating damage caused by the bombing of Hiroshima as well as how the survivors reconstructed the city to be eventually recognized as a symbol of peace and hope. The lecture centered on the significant efforts of citizens to spread peace helping eradicate nuclear weapons through various initiatives such as the activities of the Mayors for Peace which consists of approximately 7,600 cities from 163 countries and regions around the world as well as promoting peace through welcoming visitors which calls on policymakers worldwide to visit the A-bombed cities.

Dr. Seung Chul Kim’s lecture titled Traces of the Divine: Peace and Reconciliation in the Novels of Shusako Endo focused on the dynamics of various forms of human interaction which is anchored on the idea that human beings leave a trace and that the traces we leave behind are marks of sufferings we inflict on others. The lecture illustrates this point by highlighting excerpts from the novels written by acclaimed Japanese writer Shusako Endo namely The Girl I Left Behind, Silence, and When I Whistle to show how these traces affect the lives of others.

The last keynote lecture Making Peace with Creation was delivered by Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, S.J. which emphasizes the role of nature as man’s ally in which the environmental crises have further deepened man’s disconnection from creation. Fr. Villarin proposed ten simple steps in order to recover our sense of stewardship and co-responsibility which places us on the path to reconciliation with creation.

The University of Santo Tomas in cooperation with the British Council hosted the first ever ASEACCU Leadership Training Program entitled, “Executive Leadership Essentials” from August 6 – 10, 2018 at the Dr. George Ty Hall, Blessed Buenaventura G. Paredes Building. The training program catered to new administrators of ASEACCU member institutions. Administrators from Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines took part in the training program to prepare them to become competent and effective leaders.

The first day of the training program held on August 6 was a whole day session on Catholic leadership which was facilitated by Fr. Filemon Dela Cruz, Jr. O.P. The British Council facilitated the training program from August 7-9. The 3-day session centered on the role of the leader and how the leader creates trust, delivers through others, motivates his team, and welcomes, encourages and facilitates changes and the last session centered on how to lead across cultures. On August 10, the last day of the leadership training program, the participants visited two prestigious ASEACCU member Universities in Manila; De La Salle University and Adamson University and in the afternoon they had an enjoyable tour of Manila.

The leadership training program, which is funded by the ASEACCU, is the first activity of the organization apart from annual faculty and staff conference and student camp.

Student Camp: Physical Challenges and Limitations as a Source of Inspiration

Seventy four students from ASEACCU member institutions participated in the student camp. The student participants visited the Father Ray Foundation which is situated in Pattaya City in Chonburri which gave them the opportunity to see how Father Ray and his team carry out their mission to help and care for physically handicapped children who were mostly abandoned by their parents. Deeply moved by this exposure, the students realized that physical and mental limitations do not necessarily serve as a hindrance or an obstacle to one’s desire to achieve. Prof. Wiriya Namsiripongpan, who gave a lecture at the Suvranbhumi campus on August 23, 2017, has been a great source of inspiration for them. Blind since she was a teenager, she went on to study law at Harvard University and currently teaches at Thammasat University. The students also attended a half-day workshop with nine volunteer students simulating either physical or mental challenges, being led on a campus tour, aided and facilitated by groups of student campers. Another workshop session was held for the student participants to conceptualize their presentations. These presentations were done on August 26, 2017 in which the expected outcome was a social media campaign to show solidarity with less-gifted students.

Promoting the Culture of Encounter: A Reflection on the Importance of Family and School for Developing an Ethics of Ecology in Japanese Society (Dr Michael Polito -Sophia University, Tokyo)

The family as a basic unity of society should be the first one to make children aware of ecological education which teaches respect for life and the environment, but the family is aided by the school, another social institution that is responsible in shaping the fundamental cultural and attitudinal development of persons, which in this study, would refer to Japanese society. Formation is schools is of the utmost importance since it teaches not only socially acceptable behavior at an early age but also the development of an ethics of ecology.

This study is anchored on Laudato Si which recognizes the symbiotic relationship and collaborative partnership between the family and the school in Japanese society in relation to the current environmental crisis. The family and the school can be in a better position to develop an ethics of ecology for a nation whose cultural traditions celebrate the harmony and beauty of the natural world.

Dr. Michael Polito joined Sophia University in 2015 and has a Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision of Church and Non-public school Leadership from the Graduate School of Education within The Center for Catholic Leadership and Faith-Based Education at Fordham University.

Indigenous Relational Perspective of Ecological Education and Comprehensive Well-Being (Dr. Inna Reddy Edara, SVD – Fu jen Catholic University, New Taipe City)

The encyclical Laudato Si highlights “integral ecology”, an extensive response to the call to care for our common home, which involves environmental, social, economic, cultural and spiritual ecologies.  While this is instrumental in promoting environmental education which increases our awareness in creating a “culture of care” for our common home, many researchers believe that indigenous ecological knowledge systems are equally important or perhaps even more vital in caring for our environment.

This study highlights the significance of a symbiotic relationship which involves people and the ecological system and promotes an understanding of what constitutes their intimate relational dynamic which demands a holistic or global consciousness. The study likewise proposes an integral ecological education model of an “indigenous relational perspective of ecological education and comprehensive well-being” which underscores interconnectedness that brings together the indigenous aspects of environmental knowledge, kincentric ecology, ecological conversion and harmony, and ecological spirituality in creating a “culture of care” for our common home and in promoting our common good, quality of life and well-being.

Fr. Inna Reddy Edara SVD has a Ph.D. in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University in Maryland, USA. He currently works at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan.

Semen vS Samin: the Petition online “change.org” in Perspective of Laudato si’ (Mr. Finsensius Yuli Purnama – Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya)

A cement company in Indonesia goes out of its bounds by pushing for its dubious business interests which in the process exploit nature and deprive human beings as subjects of ecological management. This encroachment on basic human rights and environmentalism has led to protests against the cement plant, which protesters claim destroy and damage ecology and the environment.

This study reveals how protesters particularly women bury their feet in cement boxes as a sign of disapproval and how the Samin community resorted to technology via the internet thru Change.org to voice out their objections. 27, 876 people have already affixed their signatures on the petition to stop the operations of the cement plant in the hope that the Samin people be able to reclaim and maintain their homeland.

Finsensius Yuli Purnama has a Master’s degree in the field of Media and Communications at the University of Airlangga. He is currently a lecturer at the Widya Mandala Catholic University of Surabaya in Indonesia.

A Socio-Theological Discourse on the Land: Laudato Si’ vis-à-vis Indigenous Peoples of the Cordilleras (Dr. Jeoffrey M. Almazan – University of Santo Tomas, manila, and Dr. Francisco Agoot – Saint Louis University, Baguio City)

Cultural minorities, such as Cordillera’s indigenous peoples, should be principal dialogue partners especially when large projects affecting their lands are proposed. For them, their land is a sacred space, a gift from God, and not a commodity that can be bought and sold.  Their land speaks of their identity and values as a people and they are the ones who can care for it best. For over two decades, they continue to assert their historical right of self-determination through regional autonomy.

Pursuant to the constitutional mandate, two attempts had been waged to achieve the status of regional autonomy in the Cordillerra. This has led to dispute and failure since the two organic acts had been rejected and were never ratified. This particular study specifically seeks to answer the following questions: What are the underlying reasons for the failure of the 1998 plebiscite vis-à-vis the provisions of the Republic act 8438 and what alternative framework does Laudato Si offer in order to support a new scheme for the Cordillera Autonomous Region?

Dr. Jeofrey Almazan has a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila Philippines. He is presently teaching at St. Louis University, Baguio City Philippines.

Dr. Francisco Agoot has a Ph.D. in Educational Management and is currently teaching at St. Louis University, Baguio.

Student delegates outside Notre Dame’s Nulungu Chapel.

Welcome Reception – Lilibeth Arcena, Fiona Samantha Ajoc, John Chin, Professor Peta Sanderson and Anitra Yu.

The gift of multiculturalism, celebrating new friendships, exploring faith-based perspectives of Indigenous values and traditions, and a trip to the famous Cable Beach were highlights of the 2016 ASEACCU Conference, hosted by The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Broome Campus.

Notre Dame welcomed more than 170 delegates including university leaders, academics and students from across Australia as well as Southeast and East Asia, to the heart of Western Australia’s Kimberley region for the Conference from 22-28 August 2016. Delegates began arriving in Broome from Monday 21 August, with many staying on in the town or travelling across WA to visit some of the State’s attractions well after the Conference.

The aim of the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic College and Universities Conference (ASEACCU) is to reflect on challenges that are universal in nature, develop multinational and multi-institutional links, and continue to share the gift of faith across each community.

Comprising a student immersion program, an academic forum and an annual meeting of the leaders of Catholic universities and colleges of the region, the 2016 ASEACCU Conference provided delegates with the unique opportunity to hear from Indigenous people about their perspectives of land, country and culture, and to explore their faith in that context.

Professor Celia Hammond, Notre Dame’s Vice Chancellor, said the University’s Broome Campus provided the ideal backdrop for this year’s ASEACCU Conference which reflected in detail on the theme Valuing Indigenous Cultures and Traditions in the Care for our Common Home.

“Drawing on our shared Catholic faith and wisdom, all delegates were able to explore and consider the message of Jesus Christ as reflected in Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato si’ through a greater understanding of religion and Aboriginal culture in Australia’s Kimberley region,” Professor Hammond said.

“What was most pleasing, however, was the sense of community that developed throughout the week. The universal feedback the University has received from visitors has been sheer delight, appreciation and awe at the unity, spirit and friendliness that the ASEACCU Conference had created between the student and staff delegates.”

As part of the student program, delegates visited the Aboriginal community of Beagle Bay; shared lunch with the Kimberley Stolen Generation Aboriginal Corporation; explored the history of the cosmos on Cable Beach; and heard from Fr Denis Edwards and community leaders Peter Yu and Mark Bin Bakar on their perspectives of Laudato si’.

An enjoyable trip to Cable Beach for student delegates.

Throughout the Conference, students celebrated the diverse languages and cultures of their new friends through art, storytelling and song, as well as sampled local Australian cuisine.

The 2016 ASEACCU Academic Forum was hosted by the Religion and Global Affairs Program, an initiative of the Institute for Ethics and Society at Notre Dame. Principal partners of the Forum are the academic journals Philippiniana Sacra (University of Santo Tomas, Manila) and Solidarity (The University of Notre Dame Australia).

Dr Michael Polito (Sophia University), Dr Inna Reddy Edara (Fu Jen Catholic University), Finsensius Yuli Purnama (Widya Mandala Catholic University) and Dr Joefrey Almazan (Saint Louis University, Baguio City) delivered papers as part of the Forum.

The Conference Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral was celebrated by Bishop Christopher Saunders, and the Closing Ceremony and Dinner was held at St Mary’s College. Assumption University of Thailand will host the ASEACCU Conference in 2017.

“We were delighted to welcome delegates from across the Southeast and East Asian region for this historic ASEACCU Conference in Broome and to facilitate the celebration and growth of our special community of faith,” Professor Peta Sanderson, Pro Vice Chancellor International and Research at Notre Dame, said.

“Our special thanks go to Fr Dagohoy OP, ASEACCU Executive Secretary; Fr Barnabe D’Souza, Deputy Secretary General of International Federation of Catholic Universities; and all event sponsors for making this ASEACCU Conference such a success.”

Please visit the official ASEACCU Facebook page for photos and other highlights from the Broome Conference.
